Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Aunt Denise worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury and look through their trash. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
